Handmade Blades

My father gave me my first knife when I was 4 years old. A small pearl handled slipjoint pocket knife. Long lost , but I will never forget how I felt when I recieved the gift. It was like a right of passage at 4 years old.I had several knives growing up : Buck 110 and all sorts of Schrade knives. I carried and used them all the time and learned to sharpen and take care of those high carbon steel blades.Back then a pocket knife was just a handy tool. It wasnt till my early 20's that I realized that they could also be speacial. I purchased a Case serpentine stockman at Wal Mart for $30 some odd dollars. It was the brown jigged bone handles and the razor sharp stainless steel blades straight out of the box that got my attention.I thought , " this knife is well made and very nice," of course it also proved to be dependable and didn't stain like all my other knives from the past. With that knife I started to appreciate the craftmanship that goes in to a quality knife. I even sterted to wonder what it would be like to work in a Case factory and make knives like those. A few months later I picked up my first copy of Blade Magazine. I was floored to learn that ther were custom knifemakers that made their own patters with all sorts of materials. That sparked someting in me. Now I'm 41 and have been making my knives in my small shop for two years now.I hope to make use of this site and will enjoy posting my work and corresponding with other knife people.
