Looks like a fine hunter/ camp chef type knife to me! Nice leather work.

If it is properly waxed, very little chance of cracking. Do not use the wood for a year or two! If possible find the water content, the higher it is the longer you should wait. What wood are we talking about? I have a detailed wood book here that may help you more!

Taken directly off my grinder or after a little a little hand sanding (nothing too fine, I don't care for polished phenolics) I apply a liberal coat of WD-40 then wipe it off.
