Look up Karl Andersens videos on utube , He uses them on his takedown knives. I have made one knife like this , I used 1/16" roll pins , worked very well.

The cork gives it just a bit of cushion , so it dosent chatter when grinding.

Laurence is absolutly right. What you see on the surface is from the rolling mill , and has nothing to do with the "grain" structure in the steel. Thats why we anneal before we start working a piece of stee , then we know what the structure is like. YOU set the grain structure YOU would like...

Yep , I followed Bobs instructions years ago and made a light box , it works like a charm. Read the tutorial Tracy posted and you will be making quality stencels in no time. I often have customers want a personalized touch on their knives , I can make a stencel for almost anything.
