How should knife look before heat treat?

I still want to go for it. I love mirror finish. And it doesn't seem all that bad besides trying to get all the scratches out. But my blade is ready for HT right now. I got all the scratches out from the blade and ricasso area. From all the edges and the indent. (Was a huge pain in the butt but...

How should knife look before heat treat?

What should I do since the tip and about 1 Cm down the edge from the tip seem to be at edge thickness... And when I tried to sand it on my grinder so it would flatten it the knife somehow jumped back and the tip bend really badly.

How should knife look before heat treat?

Right now i'm using a carpenters pencil and i'm wraping a couple of inches of sandpaper around that. It's worked ok. But it's taken me a good 6 hours now and i'm not yet at 220 grit :/ I also have to put a ruler under the tip because if I leave it hanging and I press down on it it bends. I tried...

    Heat treating 1084 steel?

How would you make homemade charcoal exactly? I find it kind of expensive when it comes down to how fast it burns out. And I have no coal I can buy in my area. Would it be alright to just stick it in the oven? Flat on the rails. Can you use normal foil? haha sounds delicious. -Pedro G.

How should knife look before heat treat?

When you say final finish what do you mean? Should I get the big scratches out? How do I do that if my grinder doesn't fit in the small spaces and handsanding doesn't seem to do much.

    Heat treating 1084 steel?

Thank you very much for the explanation doug, It cleared up a bit more (I'm pretty slow at understanding). Are those color temps the flame colors or the metal colors? Could I use olive oil or canola oil or some used motor oil? I have no money to spend right now. What I have left i'm going to...

How should knife look before heat treat?

What should my knife like steel look like before heat treat? (I would be using charcoal in a crummy brick forge, it would be 1084 steel 1/4" thick. I want a mirror finish after alls said and done.) Specifically: 1) Should I have drilled the wholes already? 2) Should I give it a mirror finish...

    Heat treating 1084 steel?

Is it really that simple? With at the technicalities i've read everywhere it would seem to be somewhat more complicated than that. And with the whole warping and burning off tops and edges and what not.

    Heat treating 1084 steel?

Thank you 1) How do I know what temperature my fire is and how can I reduce it in a small crummy coal forge? 2) Is fast oil a product? 3) Does a kitchen oven work for this process? -Pedro G.

    Heat treating 1084 steel?

I have no idea where to start :P The more I look into it, as in videos, forums, sites I just get more and more confused with all the terms and science that frankly has never crossed my mind. Whatever you can tell me would be great. Thank you very much! -Pedro G.

New knife pictures, throughout the process.

So i've kept on working and as I was getting ready to hand sand I noticed that the knife looked kind of plane compared to what I wanted it. So I thought I'd add a little spine file design. I didn't want to make it the whole spine+handle. Just the 1" from where the curve starts on the blade to...

New knife pictures, throughout the process.

Alright so I finally got to do the bevels. I decided to make it a full flat grind. It was going to have maybe a 1/4" area left untouched but I messed up and continued. Sorry for not being able to post earlier and not getting more pictures throughout the process but long story short I forgot :P...

Knife blank point heat treat problem?

I've just recently finished the edge on my knife blade. It's a full flat grind blade and has a swage point. But somehow I ground the tip a little faster than the rest by .5 mm and now that I finished the grinding the point i show it should be after HT. I am afraid that the point will break or...

New knife pictures, throughout the process.

Thank you Doug, I will see what I can do about a chainsaw file. I look one up and see if HF has one. I will keep that in mind! That is exactly my plan, I'm working more psychologically than physically on this knife. I keep trying to hold myself back from trying to get things done faster. I've...
