Anybody ever used electric sanders for flats?

I use an orbital sander with the pad still on, but as a close to final sanding. If I don't use enough pressure on the sander it just spins like a grinder and throws sparks. As an orbital with 240 or finer paper it has a not to unpleasant finish. I just heat treated a blade and when I get the...

    What difference does .......

Should have explained better. I'm starting with the basic 10XX series mostly 1095 and some stuff I suppose is old coil spring 5160. The unknown is trial and error but the different manufactures of 1095 have various carbon contents so It's nice to know if what I'm using I can vary the...

    What difference does .......

What contents of minerals determine the end of the temperature range? Carbon for sure but less carbon means less temperature? What about other mineral content? I can experiment but would like a close starting point.

    Pully sheaves

I have delusions of slowing down my Grizzly (grinder). I've been reading about mounting a sheave on the motor shaft and running that to a separate motor. That sounds reasonable has anyone done something like this? I need a 1" ID for the existing motor shaft but what OD? I don't want it to go...

    Non-swimmer

I'm out in the shop gluing up a stacked leather handle. I was using the cooling water in a bucket under the grinder to wet the leather so the Gorilla Glue would absorb. As I was dipping some leather in the water my hand bumped something. I checked it out thinking I dropped in a brush or...

This will be my 5th class with Dave, I need a lot of practice and work on my grinding and that's all this one is, a full day of grinding. Actually have almost the same sanding sticks, one of the first classes I took we used some that Dave had so I went home and made my own from aluminum and...
