Does this look normal? What is it?

I'm curious about what the edge of this blade shows. It's forged 1095, heat treated, quenched in 100* canola blade first. Then tempered at 400*. I have seen this on a couple I have made and it polishes out with fine paper. I'm curious as to what might be causing it and if it will hurt...

getting ready to heat treat but have a few questions

I may be late on this one but FWIW time from oven to quench is very important. Plan your move and make it quick. It made a big difference for me.

Thanks for the input John. I'm tossing stuff on the balance scale here...... Something I've never done ^ Professional knowledge and experience Pretty much a no brainer. Thanks all, I think I'll just do what is proven, try to get good at it, and leave experimentation as something to try someday.

It hasen't been etched or heat treated. All I have done is wire brush it and do the basic shaping. The wire wheel I used was not very aggressive and didn't seem to remove any base material just the scale that was left. I've thought of having it surface ground but that might make the piece too...

No etching yet, also no sanding or smoothing. All I did was wire wheel it. After looking and thinking all I did was remove any scale left after forging. Probably normal. I like the roughness and will leave it on in one area. If, after final etching, I come to my senses and find out I should...

I have some damascus but I don't know that much about it. I know who made it, Ironarm but as far as working it and what is 'supposed' to be done with it nothing. I took some of the end and went over it with the wire wheel and it seems that some sort of slag or scale came off and left very very...

    Homemade camo handles

Thanks for the offer, I'll take you up on it. I have some tan Kydex I was planning on using. Do you know of any place I can see the mountings and maybe some examples of how sheaths are attached? Would a Kydex sheath need some sort of retainer with snap or is it rigid enough when formed to...

    Homemade camo handles

Yes sir, wives are a strange lot. :) I am going to try and finish it up this weekend and will put up a picture. The piece came out of the press last night and I haven't had time to do anything with it yet. Murph, The fabric my wife got was from a local store, She got two patterns, the one...

    Homemade camo handles

I've been working on making some camo handles for a gift knife. I tried using old school camo and fiberglass resin. The resin was very dark and I really didn't like the way the pattern looked. My wife, bless her heart, didn't like it either and scrounged me up some of the new digital pattern...

    For my 89 yo Uncle.

I like forging and the few bumps and imperfections that go along with it. Sorry, I just do and so does my Uncle so I made this for his 89th Birthday. 1095, 6" blade 4.5" maple handle

Thanks Doug for the tutorial, I've got more knowledge and some ideas now. And I'm not a big fan of stainless either.

    Camp knife

I've never heard the term before but an all purpose around camp knife makes sense. What attributes should a good camp knife have size, shape material etc? I'm thinking one should do everything from cutting kindling to spreading peanut butter.
