    Paring knife

First time trying a paring knife and first use of the new HT oven. Material is 1/16" 15N20, ground to almost a zero edge. That was fun. Handle is just plain old walnut and green spacer material. This was done just to see if I could work 1/16" successfully. Might do more of these actually, but I...

new maker from Idaho long time knife enthusiast

Nathan, I'd second the 1084 being a noob myself, as it's easy to work and forgiving in heat treat. Plus, it's more available where I am than 1075, LOL! Welcome to the addiction. Next you'll be scouring the online and in print classifieds looking for cheap used equipment you suddenly MUST have, LOL!

    Controller

Tim, this is definitely old enough to be a relay oven. I get the impression that switching it to SSR may be fairly straightforward, and I know for sure that there are some good controllers at a good price out there. I have also found the upgraded controllers for this oven, (as it was made with...

    !st kitchen knife

Thanks John. Zebrano is a good looking wood, and polishes quite nicely. The handle is very comfortable, and is designed to be used with fingers on the bolster. I have found that I get pretty nice control over the cuts this way. I will definitely be making more like this.

    Controller

Just scored a Thermolyne 48000 for $60 today, only slightly used. It came with an archaic controller though, an automatic no memory no ramp one. Does anybody know if this can be replaced with a newer aftermarket one?

    !st kitchen knife

My first kitchen knife. 6" long, 1.5" wide, 3/16" thick 1084 with Zebrano wood handle scales. Hand made brass bolsters. Slices through tomatoes like a dream! Wasn't sure how hard getting a zero edge on that thickness was going to work, but it came out fine. A plus is that when cutting through...

Loving that guard! I hear you about not necessarily wanting perfect. Mine are primitive functional blades, and I use all hand tools, with the exception of a 1" x 30" sander. Always end up with scratches I just can't get out all the way. Still, practice makes perfect, right? LOL!. Beautiful knife...

    6150 testing

I WAS looking to build a nice garage long workbench this year, but that might have to wait now...fortunately I have a lot of trees and dead falls around, so getting wood for handles is fairly easy.
