What's going on in your shop?

I'm used to do a bit of wood working so I am a "jig-a-holic"...LOL ! I like to build jigs that help me make things faster....better and consistent so I made these jigs and vise for my new knife making adventure. They work VERY well and make life a lot easier for me :) My bevel grinding jigs...

HT oven & oil recommendations needed

Thanks for the reply Kurt. I am doing stock removal only. I have no plans to forge. I am doing knives under 13" so I do not need a deep oven.) I plan on working primarily with O1 and maybe D2 and A2 in the future.

I am going to start working with O1 exclusively and need suggestions on two thing : 1. Best HT oven under $1000 ? 2. What quenching oil is optimal for O1 ?

    McMaster/Carr quenching oil for O1 ?

After an exhaustive search for Parks AAA and coming up empty handed in my area (northern, VA.), I am thinking of trying the McMaster/Carr quenching oil. Anybody have any experience with it ? I am working with O1 exclusively. I would rather use a bonefided quenching oil designed for the task and...

Disc sander/grinder for my next machine ?

Understood. I think I want to stay at the 1/2 - 1HP range just to have the power available. As I mentioned earlier, I am only looking to use a disc to flatten tangs and handle stock so I do not need a variable speed set up for this I think. The Kalamazoo DS10 10" 1/2HP with adjustable work...

Disc sander/grinder for my next machine ?

Do you find the 1/3 HP a little under powered ? I was thinking that a 1HP would be much better......Your thoughts ?

Disc sander/grinder for my next machine ?

Hello all.....I am just finishing up my tool buying for my knife shop and am contemplating ordering a some sort of disc sander/grinder. I realize that a variable speed Baldor 9" machine with a KMG work rest is the ideal setup but I am wondering if I really need that elaborate (exspensive !) of a...

Which epoxy do you use, and why?

Acra-Glass from Brownell's #1................G-Flex from West Labs #2. There is no need to look past these two :)

Green link belt from HF ?

I hear ya' Ed. I switched out to a link belt on my table saw a few years ago and like them. It reduced vibration a little ....not a lot but some. The link belts seem to transfer power a little better....I think anyway. They also do not develop "memory" if sitting idle for a while. I'll throw one...

Craftsman 2x42 Grinder, Mods and Troubles

Ed hit the nail on the head. When I decided to try knife making, I did my research and went ahead and ordered a bran new KMG rig. Yeah...it was not cheap but I won't have any of the headaches and frustration to deal with. When trying to improve under powered and cheap tools I refer to this...

    Workbench Layout Input

Also....do not too carried away about dust control. Unless you have tons of money at your disposal and a VERY elaborate and well designed system, at best your only going to get maybe 50% of the dust under wraps. It's a never ending battle that you will not win. I have been down the dust control...

Best quality chamfer bits to use ?

Why does a zero flute or single flute cut/work better ? I do not understand why this is but am sure your advice carries weight.....I'll check them out :)

Best quality chamfer bits to use ?

I am needing to get away from using the el'cheapo "chatter-matic" bits I get at my local hardware store. Who makes a really good, chatter free chamfer bit ? I am needing it to chamfer my 5/16" lanyard thongs.

    How do you grind?

I concur.....If you want the MOST accurate, repeatable and consistent product......use a jig. The buying customer does not give a rat's ass how it was ground. They (and I) care about a consistent product. Free handing is NOT going to compare.....just the way it is folks.

    Disc sander/grinder opinions needed

I am still wondering how much I really will need a disc. I am working with precision ground O1 tool steel and am only building fixed blade/full tang knives. will a disc really add much/do much good outside of my KMG ?

    Mini mill wanted

I am contemplating getting a mini mill, I have no intentions of buying ANYTHING from HB...just to be clear...LOL ! Let me hear your recommendations for the best mill I can get for under $1K. I will be using it mainly for custom wood/G10/micarta handle/scale sculpting/shaping and some light steel...

    Disc sander/grinder opinions needed

All righty then......I guess I should go with a 9" based on the experienced advice here. I am setting up my shop space and want to get things right the first go round. Here is was I have bought so far : 1. KMG 1.5HP grinder w/ flat platen and small arm attachment (3 speed system) I will add an...
