You are right that the design envelope for the blade was exceeded, but my take on this thread from Darrin, is where it broke when it did fail, and that it might have done better without the deep, straight logo line.

Laurence, I haven't mastered the technique yet either. I do look the polished/satin look. Not too wet here this time of year. It's -10 F right now anf the humidity is below 30% in this type of weather. I think I must just be to hard on the belts. Duncan

Frank, thanks for joining in. I'm not sure what you mean when you say you are "going to chase this out".

I don't leave them on the machine, but you may be right that I am using too much pressure. They break on the tape of the joint every time. I'll try using less pressure. I wonder if the tape is getting compromised during break in. What is your break in technique? Thanks, Rudy Duncan

I think you'd get much use from a mill. I use my mill for ever knife i make, be it metal work or handle work. If you are getting good results from your steel and established HT recipes, and can get someone (try your friendly local machine shop. They like doughnuts.) with a tester to verify it...

Just a report. I wet sanded the handle with good results. There is still metal embedded in the wood, but it cleaned it up a bit and if it were clean to start it just might work. You have to let it dry out before oil as well. Duncan
