    01 slicer stained black

I've gotten blue color, black to a lesser extent, often on 01. It does seem that different runs of steel color differently. I recently finished a 01 hunter with a 400 cork belt finish and when I used it to breast out a wild turkey, I got a blue hue. I see the most reactions when I cut steak or...

    Knife Maker Ethics

Mike, I agree with your comments. Gil's knives are truly unique in design and build, and I too have seen some of what your talking about - "cheap copies" so to speak. However they were easy to spot. That brings me to another thought- I have seen it in other areas of expertise. When someone...

    Hardening O1 tool steel?

good looking fillet knife. How flexible is the blade? I have used a bunch of 01 and would not normally think of it as the "best" choice for a flexible tool....but I could be wrong.

    Knife Maker Ethics

I made an interesting observation at the last Blade Show: As I cruised around the tables, more especially the ABS tables, I noticed a lot of knives that looked A LOT alike. Not to besmurch any of those knives, they were all outstanding. But I didn't notice anybody getting in a kink over the fact...

    Knife Maker Ethics

Oddly enough, I have thought about this very topic recently- was going to ask a similar question. But after reading this, I have come to some conclusions and questions: In my opinion, if I see as Randal photo and like it, decide to try to make a knife of that persuasion, I will change a few...

    Double tempering of 01 steel

In this discussion of double temper - would a "snap temper" at 100 deg less be considered as a "temper cycle" or just a stabilization? Also, we've all seen charts on 0-1 saying 1450-1500 for quench temps- does this range relate to final tempering temps in any way? Say if I am going to go for a...

    My "Knife" Vise

Ed, have you considered (I'm sure you have) putting rubber pieces on the "jaws" for putting a finished blade in for handle work? Perhaps they are there and I cant see them...

    Solder Help!!

Great info Stacy! Thanks for all that effort. Unfortunately, after I have struggled with this a few times, I am swearing off solder and sticking to JB weld. Solder seems to be a lot of trouble for nothing.

    440c versus ats 34

I agree with your point Dave. Perhaps it would have been better said this way: The best steel is whichever one that best fits the intended use and that the maker is best skilled at using. Even with all the data, it takes practice- I'm referring to sole authorship here. But even HT contractors...

How long does hand sanding take you?

Franks mobile 1 trick is the stuff! If you are looking for an outstanding semi-mirror satin finish. It will take me about 30 mins on a flat ground. As has been said, much of the trick is getting a clean pre-HT blade. I do all that on the grinder, I never hand sand prior HT.

    question on o-1 mirror finish

I have done several O1 mirrors, don't anymore, but what I did was go to a 400 prior HT. I would suggest you use some de-carb powder or paste or treat in SS foil (foil makes quenching a pain) or you will have trouble with the mirror finish. If you do it right, you can go right back to 400 up to...

    440c versus ats 34

I'd rather have a properly treated 440-C than a marginally treated ATS-134. Just because it is technically better doesn't mean any particular maker has the ability to maximize the characteristics of every steel- including myself. Who is the perfect maker with all steels....? Cheverolet may make...

    Some questions on Etching names/logos

I got a q-tip question: do/can you move the q-tip around during the etch to cover the whole stencil? My logo is larger than the standard q-tip cotton end>

Do makers use their own knives?

As some have said, "that's why I started making...." I usually carry a small EDC of mine, often its the first one I ever made. Unless in a area where carrying a fixed blade knife is unacceptable. Then a Bob Lum design Benchmade is my preferred carry piece. Just about every knife I make, I make...

    Finishing question/s

I used the clean buff on a Cocobola handle last week after sanding to 2000 grit, oiling with teak oil, sanding again and then buffed - came out really well, in fact I sold it at the local Gun Show this weekend - COOL! Thanks for the idea! 2thumbs
